The Multi-Task Varestraint® (MTV) Series provides precise, repeatable, and reproducible testing capabilities for evaluating solidification, liquation, and heat-affected-zone (HAZ) cracking susceptibility. Systems support conventional and simultaneous Varestraint testing across multiple weld configurations, with precise strain application, closed-loop control, and integrated data acquisition capabilities.

What Is Varestraint Testing?

Varestraint testing evaluates a material’s susceptibility to hot cracking during welding. By applying controlled bending strain to a test specimen during welding, researchers can examine cracking behavior under defined conditions. The resulting cracks can be measured to compare weldability and assess the influence of materials and welding parameters.

From MTV 3500 to MTV 4500

The MTV 3500 is a proven weldability testing platform for demanding research applications. Building on this platform, the conceptual MTV 4500 is intended to add enhanced welding capability and advanced diagnostic technologies developed by Gray Beards Engineering. The MTV 3500 brochure also introduces the 4500 concept and its proposed capabilities.
